Blackjack is the most played card game for two reasons: the odds of the house are less, and an average player can easily win. It is very popular in the U.S and is also known as twenty-one.

The game is relatively simpler than the other casino games. With time and practice, anyone can be an expert. If the game is played smartly, the odds favor the player making it attractive to win big.

The rules are easy to understand for a layperson. Another thing that makes blackjack so popular is its thrilling nature. With every move, the game gets interesting and unpredictable. However, the right moves and understanding of cards can increase your chances of winning.

The history of blackjack goes back to the 1760s but its popularity started increasing post World War 1. You will find blackjack in every casino particularly, in the U.S. The rules are slightly different when it is played in a casino than at home. In a casino, the dealer is the bank and is in charge of everything.

The dealer shuffles distribute and handle all the bets. While in a home version, there is a rotation, all players get to be the dealer, also known as a changing bank.

Characteristics of the game

The deck of cards

Usually, the game is played with several decks, using six decks is the most common. In most casinos, a four-deck blackjack is also popular. But there is no restriction on playing with a single deck. It makes the game way too easy.

In a multiple decks game, the dealer uses a blank card as an indication for the reshuffling of cards. Similarly, many dealers also use a box to distribute cards. As it allows the dealer to take cards one at a time face down.

The game’s purpose is that each player tries to get as close to 21 as possible before the dealer without going over, to win.

Value of cards

The face card is valued at 10, while the value of an ace card depends on the game, either 11 or 1. While other cards are of their face value.

Betting limit

Players must bet before the start of the game. The bet ranges from $5 to $1000 depending on the casino. However, when you play online blackjack, the conditions are flexible and there are no limitations on betting values. Also, you receive sign-up bonuses and rewards on top of winning.

Card distribution

The dealer is responsible for shuffling decks. While doing so, he asks one player to cut the deck and then inserts a blank card so the remaining cards are unused. It is the responsibility of the dealer to properly mix cards. Playing with several decks and cutting the deck in half makes it challenging for expert players to count, which levels the playing field.

How is the game played?

Once all the bets are placed, the dealer gives one card face up to each player, including themselves. Then again, the dealer gives one card face up to everyone, but this time, the dealer takes the card face down. Now, except for the dealer, everyone has two cards face up.

The dealer starts the game from the left. The player whether stands or hits in an attempt to get closer to 21. It is upon the player to stand on the two cards or ask for additional cards until gets close to the score and then stands. If the player goes over 21 then they are bust and the dealer takes the bet and moves on to the next player.

Similarly, there is a soft hand in the game. It is a combination of an ace card with any other card except ten. Because a player can count the ace card as 11 or 1, this gives freedom to the player to continue the game and ask for more cards until the score is close to 21.

What is the dealer’s play?

Once the dealer finishes serving the players, they turn up the face-down card. The total needs to be 17 or more. If it is not, then the dealer must draw a card until the count is 17 or more and then stand. If the dealer gets an ace and counts it as 11 and takes the count over 17 but not over 21, then the ace card is counted as 11.

Tips to win at blackjack

Some of the tips that can help you win are as follows:

  • Familiarize yourself with the game first. Learn basics and form a strategy. There is an assumption that the players should always assume that the card face down is a 10. The odds also favor it to be true.
  • It is favorable to double your bet when the total of the first two cards is 11. If you get a pair of aces or 8s, split them.
  • Do not split 10 value cards or a pair of 5s. You must count the pair of 5s as a 10 because if you get a 10-value card your total would be 20.
