What is The Difference Between Analog and Digital Computer

In the field of signals used to transmit signals, we can find two different ways, analog and digital, both use electricity, but in different ways. The Major Difference Between Analog and Digital Computer is that  Analog Computers Provide continuous value and represent physical quantities in the form of waves or in continuous forms while Digital Computers provide discrete value and represent physical quantities with the help of symbols or numbers.

Difference Between Analog and Digital Computers in Tabular Form

Analog ComputerDigital Computer
1. Data
It represents data continuously. It represents data discretely as 0s and 1s.
2. Operation
It is used to measure physical values such as temperature and pressure. It converts the data into digits and then performs all types of operations on these digits.
3. Signal Types
The type of signal is continuously varying electromagnetic waves. The type of signal is the sequence of voltage pulses over time.
4. Transmission
Means of transmission of analog signals are without regard to their content.Means of transmission are concerned with the content of the signal.
5. Memory
It has no memory or computing devices. It has memory and solves problems by counting precisely.
6. Output
It adopts physical devices to measure continuously variable data e.g. in a thermometer temperature is measured by the expansion of mercury. It gives written outputs at extremely fast rates with high accuracy.
7. Devices
It has no output and input devices. It has input and output devices.
8. Examples

Examples of the analog computer are:

Thermometer, barometer, Speedometer of cars, voltmeter, ammeter, etc.

The IBM PC and all other personal computers belong to digital computers.
9. Applications
Measurement of different physical quantities, and scientific applications.Business, science, and home.

In analog technology, the electrical signals are converted into electrical impulses of varying amplitude and in digital technology, it transforms them into data in binary mode (0 and 1), where each bit represents two different amplitudes.

Analogous

It is any continuous signal for which the character of a variable represents a qualitative characteristic. Use a set of values to represent the information.

Analog signals suffer from alterations that cause communication errors. The copies in the communication are not as good quality as in the original. If you want to represent a variable analog value digitally, quantization errors can occur.

Digital

Use continuous-discrete values. Represent information discreetly, with letters and numbers, or continuously, with sounds, images, or other indicators. Employs specific timing sequences to determine communication. In addition, it requires that the language be understood by both who sends the message and who receives it. The symbols used must have a specific meaning. Copies of digital communications are as good quality as the original.

Differences between analog and digital

  • Analog technology is cheaper than digital.
  • Data in digital technology is converted into binary code and then transformed into its original form on the receiving equipment.
  • Analog technology represents information with the signs of human communication.
