Difference Between Centipede and Millipede

The Basic difference between Centipede and Millipede is that Millipede is a Diplopoda class of arthropods, detritivores, and not venomous and can’t sting or bite while Centipede is a Chilopoda class of arthropods, carnivores (eat earthworms and spiders), venomous and can bite.

Difference Between Centipede and Millipede

Centipede has short antennas. they have two pairs of legs in their body segments and Millipede has long antennas having a single pair of legs in their body segments.

There are different types of arthropods. They are members of the phylum of arthropods and it is the largest phylum of the animal kingdom.

In total, there is around 80 to 84 percent of known arthropod species, which include familiar forms such as crabs, millipedes, insects, lobsters, spiders, mites, and millipedes.

Arthropods are found in all habitats on Earth, where some are found only in the aquatic ecosystem, and others are found in both the terrestrial and the aquatic ecosystems.

As mentioned earlier, millipedes and millipedes are both members of the phylum of arthropods and are grouped into different classes, depending on their characteristics.

The centipedes are grouped in the Chilopoda class and the centipedes belong to the Diplopoda class. At first glance, the two creatures are quite similar, but there are several differences between the two. Some of these differences are listed below in the table.

Difference Between Centipede and Millipede in Tabular Form

Both centipedes and millipedes occupied segmented bodies and both belong to Myriapoda. Centipedes have one pair of legs per body segment, while millipedes have two pairs of legs. The major 10 difference between Centipede and Millipede is discussed here briefly.

The centipedes are generally flat in shape. The millipedes are generally in cylindrical shape.
Centipede species can vary from 4 to 12 inches in length.Millipede species can vary from 1 to 8 inches in length.
Mostly the centipede species are yellowish-grey or brownish in color. The millipedes are of black or dark reddish-brown color.
Their body is divided into 15 to 100 segments.Their body is divided into 11 to 150 segments.
Centipedes are flexible, flattened, and dorsoventrally arthropod species.Millipedes are subcylindrical and inflexible arthropod species.
Centipedes have one pair of legs at every body segment.Millipedes have two pairs of legs at every body segment.
Centipedes have long legs, that extend sideways from their body.Millipedes have short legs, and do not extend sideways from their body.
Averagely, the female centipede species lay 40 to 50 eggs.Averagely, the female millipede species lay up to 300 eggs.
Centipedes species are fast-moving species.Millipedes species are slow-moving species.
Centipedes feed on other smaller organisms.Millipedes feed on dead and other decomposing matter.
