Examples of ectothermic and endothermic animals

Within the broad classification that can be made of animals, there is one that divides them according to the type of blood they possess. That is, they are classified into ectoderm and endoderm animals . The ectothermic , also termed cold – blooded animals , do not produce body heat, so that depend on the type of environment and the temperature of same. On the other hand, endothermic animals , which are also called warm-blooded animals , have the ability to regulate their own body temperature.

Ways to maintain and incorporate heat in ectothermic animals

The way these animals have to stabilize body temperature can be in two different ways:

  • Heliothermy . It is the method par excellence of reptiles, who capture the heat that comes from the sun.
  • Thigmothermia . This other way is to move on hot surfaces. These may be stones heated by the sun’s rays, but they are sometimes liquid (water, for example).

The main difference is that ectothermic animals do not generate their own heat so this does not cause them to waste energy. The advantage or benefit of ectothermic animals is that they need less amount of food since they do not need to keep their body temperature stable, as is the case with endothermic animals.

Ways to conserve heat in endothermic animals

  • Homeothermy . In these cases, the body temperature remains stable and independent of external environmental conditions. Thus, the body temperature of endothermic animals that are homeothermic is generally higher than ambient temperatures.
  • Tachymetabolism . They are animals that in a state of rest their body temperature is a little lower than the body temperature in movement.

They maintain their body temperature for the benefit of the body’s chemical reactions. The downside could be that the body regulates itself even when the body is not in motion, so the energy expenditure is higher than in the case of ectothermic animals.
