Examples of monoliths of natural origin
This time we want to talk to you about the monoliths of natural origin that exist around the world and that are the most famous for their characteristics. These stone blocks are made up of a single individual rock.
Peña de Bernal
This is an example of a natural monolith that is located in Mexico, more specifically in the town of San Sebastián Bernal, in the state of Queretaro. It stands 350 meters above the town and is believed to have been formed 100 million years ago during the Jurassic period. Back then, this monolith was at least three times the size it is today.
Gibralatar Rock
This is another example of natural monoliths in the world , which is in fact an overseas territory that is located in the United Kingdom, right at the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. It is characterized by being a monolith with a height of 426 meters and where around 27,800 inhabitants live, in addition to the famous Barbary macaques, which are the only wild primates that exist in Europe.
Torres del Paine
It is also another of the most important examples of natural monoliths in the world , in this case located in the extreme south of Patagonia, in Chile. It is also a national park where there are mountains, glaciers and lakes, however the central elements are the three towers, granite monoliths, whose highest peak is approximately 2,500 meters.
The Captain, Yosemite
Besides being one of the examples of natural monoliths in the world, it is also one of the most famous monuments in Yosemite National Park, in the United States. This monolith has a height of almost 910 meters, which is why it is considered one of the largest in height in the world.
Devils tower
It is a natural monolith found in the Black Hills in Crook County in the United States. It was declared a National Monument in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt, although it gained a lot of notoriety in 1977 when some of the scenes from the science fiction film “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” were filmed there.
Ben amera
It is a natural monolith found in Mauritania and after Uluru, it is considered as the second largest monolith in the entire world. It is located 5 km from a small town called Tmeimichat, in addition to being one of the great tourist attractions in the area.
Sigiriya
In this case it is a natural monolith found in Sri Lanka and is 370 meters high, in addition to offering spectacular views of the jungle. Of course it is one of the main tourist attractions in Sri Lanka. Previously this monolith was used as a monastery and later it was used as a fortress for King Kassyapa.
Zuma rock
It is probably one of the most impressive natural monoliths in the world . It is located in the northern part of Nigeria, in the capital of Abuja. This monolith has a height of 725 meters and is easily visible from different points of the city.
