- Alkynes: hydrocarbon chains with one or more C ≡C triple bonds .
- Alcohols: hydrocarbon chains with one or more hydroxyl groups R – OH .
- Mercaptans or thiols: hydrocarbon chains with one or more thiol groups R – SH .
- Aldehydes: hydrocarbon chains with a terminal carbonyl group R – CHO .
- Ketones: hydrocarbon chains with one or more intermediate carbonyl groups R – CO – R ‘ .
- Carboxylic acids: hydrocarbon chains with one or more R – COOH carboxyl groups .
- Ethers: two hydrocarbon chains attached to an oxygen atom R – O – R ‘ .
- Esters: In the R – COO – R ‘form , a hydrocarbon chain replaces the hydrogen of a carboxylic acid. Organic salts are considered.
- Acid Anhydrides: Two carboxylic acid chains have come off a water molecule together, and they come together. R-COO-OC-R .
- Amines: hydrocarbon chains with an amino group R – NH 2 . More chains can substitute for the hydrogens, turning the molecule into a secondary or tertiary amine.
